Atlanta (August 4, 2010) – Atlanta journalist and award-winning food critic for Creative Loafing, ELLIOTT MACKLE comes to Outwrite Bookstore & Coffeehouse to read from and sign copies of his second novel, HOT OFF THE PRESSES (Lethe Press), on TUESDAY, AUGUST 31, at 7:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
In HOT OFF THE PRESSES Henry Thompson, editor of Outlines, Atlanta’s gay-lesbian newsweekly, thought he had big problems dealing with conservative, old-money owners, and the corrupt mayor. The latter, an evangelical clergyman, denies that African-American men are at risk with AIDS and sees no benefit in accepting federal safe-sex-education funds just months before welcoming the world for the 1996 Olympic Games. Henry lost his lover to AIDS, sees the casual sex happening in the community as almost criminal and certainly lethal, and is increasingly lonely.
Enjoying a safe, voyeuristic sweat in a men’s-club steam room, Henry begins an affair with a local gymnast favored for gold. When the journalist, the marquee athlete, a fun-loving body worker, and a rival coach get up close and personal in a locker room during the Games, the most sensational bits are trumpeted by NBC, Sports Illustrated and CNN. Only Henry knows the whole story but he faces a crucial conflict. Should he report the ill-advised behavior of his buddies and stay true to his ideals – or give in to world-class pressure? This is but the first of a series of ethical challenges from the morally compromised Atlanta establishment.
About the new book, best selling novelist Felice Picano said, “This is the way gay novels used to be written: big, smart, sexy, funny – with important themes, great characters, and the tainted heart of a big city at its core.”
Mackle covered the 1996 Olympic Games for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He has written for Travel & Leisure, Food & Wine, the Los Angeles Times, and public television, and was a long-time columnist for Creative Loafing. His first novel, It Takes Two, was a Lambda Award finalist.
